The Ravaging Pandemic Documentary

Have you heard of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?

You may not have but it is something you need to know about. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines making infections harder to treat. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared AMR as one of the top 10 global health public threats facing humanity, and the first comprehensive analysis of the global impact of AMR showed that drug-resistant infections caused 1.27 million deaths in 2019, with the highest burden being in Sub-Saharan Africa.

AMR is a multi-faceted global health, and development threat that requires a One Health Approach. It affects humans, animals, and the environment due to myriad reasons such as poor hygiene, and sanitation, irrational use of antimicrobials in human, livestock, and agriculture sectors, improper waste management of antimicrobials, migration of people and animals infected with drug-resistant bacteria, and environmental pollutants among others.

In this lengthy documentary developed in partnership with Planet Wizard Africa, we set out to understand the situation of AMR in Kenya, the different efforts that have been initiated to curb AMR, and what the progress looks like in. We engaged experts from different sectors such as; government ministries, hospitals, regulatory bodies, professional organizations, academia, international organizations, and civil societies.
