RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Globally, antimicrobial-resistant infections account for about 700,000 deaths a year. This figure is projected to be 10 Million by the year 2050 overtaking cancer and chronic diseases. This calls for the urgent need to preserve the efficacy of antibiotics, develop new ones and identify alternative therapeutic strategies. Africa is predicted to suffer the most due to a lacking diagnostic capacity and failure to routinely monitor patterns of resistance.

At SAS-Africa we work to solve these continental challenges. Our research and innovation hub is geared towards finding cost-effective diagnostics, novel antimicrobials and vaccines and routinely monitoring patterns of resistance.
